In English, the demonstrative pronouns are this (one), that (one), these (ones), those (ones). In Spanish, the demonstrative adjectives and pronouns are identical, but the demonstrative pronouns have a written accent over the e: éste, ése, aquél, etc. |
The neuter demonstrative pronouns have no number, no gender, and no written accent. They are used when there is no specific reference to a noun: |
Odio todo esto. - I hate all this. |
Forms of éste are also used to mean the latter, and forms of aquél are used to mean the former. |
Ejemplo: Éste es el zapato que me gusta pero aquél es mucho mejor. |
This one is the shoe that I like, but that one is much better. |
Compré tomates y zanahorias. Éstas eran deliciosas pero aquéllos no sabían a nada. |
I bought tomatoes and carrots. The latter were delicious, but the former had no taste. |
