All Spanish verbs fall into one of three categories; -ar, -er, -ir. The designation is determined by the ending of the infinitive.

For example, hablar (to talk) is an -ar verb; vender (to sell) is an -er verb; and escribir (to write) is an -ir verb.

These categories of verbs are conjugated for the various pronouns according to their ending. Each verb category has its own set of endings. With any verb, in order to conjugate it correctly you must first take off the -ar, -er, or -ir. The remainder is called the root, or stem, of the verb.

hablar - ar = habl
vender - er = vend
vivir - ir = viv

By taking an infinitive down to its root form and by knowing your present tense endings for -ar, -er, -ir verbs, you can now form almost any Spanish verb correctly in the present tense
