WW-II hangers, Spanhoe airfield. The airfileld is a private airfield today.
Spanhoe airfield was once home to as many as 215 C-47 Skytrain aircraft of the 315th Troop Carrier Command. Aircraft based at Spanhoe participated in all the major
air operations in WW-II, between July 1942 and May 1945. The base provided accommodations for 2,400 personnel. During airborne operations, including D-day and
Operation Market Garden, when large numbers of airborne parachutists were moved to the airfield, tents would be pitched on the interior grass regions of the airfield, or wherever
space
could be found to accommodate the airborne forces for the short time they would be bivouacked at the station prior to the operation. |
